The element of Self, which is associated with the letter "I", speaks to how we interact with the world.  When we are in conflict with our environment, we have two choices, change what is external, or change what is internal.  This is the polarity between "Being" and "Doing".

The element of Soul connects us to the spiritual world.  This is the element of wonder for the world around us and inside us.  The runes associated with Soul include all the remaining vowels: a, e, o, u.  These are the sounds that are fundamental, but often overlooked.  Likewise, the Soul is the root of our humanity, and yet we often neglect it.

The element of Water reminds us that there is power in yielding.  With time all things are possible: stalactites grow hundreds of feet in one-drop increments, canyons the size of mountains are carved into stone.  Patience is a gift.

The element of Fire inspires intense obsession and devotion.  Intensity doesn't just exist in moments of explosion, but in contemplation too.  Fire destroys to allow new growth, but it also nurtures.  When we burn away what's combustible, only the structure remains, the foundation.  And from this clean state, we can create again.

The element of Earth grounds us in what is most important.  It inspires introspection, and through this self-awareness.  Earth is constant, enduring, and magnificent.  This element reminds us of our ephemeral nature, in which we can revel.  And from which understanding, we can build.

Architect, General, Rebel, Diplomat, Celebrant, Philosopher, Sage, Hermit

The element of Air is playful and curious.  Like the wind, we can explore every hidden crevice.  Air is the element of inspiration.  Formless and free, we are not restricted.  When we embrace the element of air, we are reminded that rules should sometimes be broken.
